BRF Episode 04: “Echo”
Echoes have been fascinating to explore! It took us far and wide - we started with the mythology but somehow ended up talking about the Big Bang – an echo of it anyway.
A performance of the overture composed by Mendelssohn, “Die Hebriden” as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Claudio Abbado can be found in full here. The dramatic rising, crashing and confluence of sounds is particularly beautiful when you imagine the otherworldly place that inspired its creation. Where there’s otherworldly, there’s myth and fantastical storytelling so have a look see at the legend of Fionn mac Cumhaill or Finn MacCool and how the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland links into all of this!
If you’d like to move from mythic giants and beautifully constructed pieces of classical music to awe-inspiring engineering, then this is the episode for you! We talked briefly about the Mayan temple of El Castillo in Chichen Itza, but then again we could have talked about it till the cows came home! Have a listen to the clapping-turned-chirruping here, but we’d also encourage you to take a deep die into this magnificent structure. Of note – how the temple transforms every equinox and how intricately connected the Maynas’ engineering marvel was to the systems of cenotes that exist below it.
Our “Mosts” section was particularly interesting this time round. Can you imagine that the Mayans would be mentioned in the same episode as an abandoned World War II era fuel storage facility in Scotland? Neither did we, but here you go! We did say that this episode was a rollercoaster.
There was more, but we’ll stop with the spoilers now and encourage you to listen to the episode for the rest of the facts! One last thing, does anyone recall seeing a duck quack near a reflective surface? Asking for a friend.
Until next time…(time, time, time).
